Miami Teen and Student Arrested and Charged with Assault Against Teacher, Family Members Say Teen was Acting in Self Defense, has Learning Disabilities and “Needs Someone Who Can Understand Him”

A sad and difficult story regarding the alleged assault of a Miami-area school teacher by a student with learning disabilities hit headlines in Miami-Dade County earlier this month, and a community is searching for answers as to how the incident even happened in the first place. According to local news reports, on Thursday, December 3, an 18-year-old male and 11 grade student at Miami Northwestern Senior High School was arrested for allegedly assaulting his teacher. The 18-year-old student, Conley Williams, is alleged to have physically harmed his teacher to the point of her needing medical assistance at the high school. According to Williams’ mother, however, her son, who has had no prior disciplinary issues at the school, was “acting in self-defense,” when the alleged assault occurred. Although multiple witnesses who say they saw the alleged assault in progress corroborate the teacher’s account, Darcheema Pierce, Williams’ mother, described that her son’s version of the events include that “[h]e was in a classroom speaking with a student, and [the teacher] told him he was being rude. She grabbed him, and he turned around and grabbed her back. When he grabbed her, her necklace popped. He did not hit her.” She also added that, in regards to her son, who has learning disability, “Something needs to be done. My son needs someone who can understand him and what he’s talking about.”
Following the incident, arrest, and assault charge, Williams appeared before Judge Mindy Glazer of the Miami-Dade Circuit Court. Judge Glazer said to the teen, “You were arrested for battery on a school employee, a teacher. If you are arrested for anything else, you will be locked up until your trial…You need to be respectful of all your teachers and keep your hands to yourself if you want to have the benefit of getting your education and graduating from high school.” Judge Glazer also told Williams that he could not have any contact with the teacher and she also granted him a public defender to defend against the assault charges. In response to the Judge, Williams’ grandmother, who attended his hearing, argued that the teacher should have been arrested, stating, “I don’t even understand why the teacher is not arrested because the teacher grabbed him first, and he responded.” However, Judge Glazer replied that, “I wasn’t there. You need to speak privately with the attorney about a defense and discuss the matter further.” The tragic case is currently still under investigation, and Williams has not been suspended from school as a result of the alleged assault.
