Miami Mother Charged with Child Neglect after Child Falls, Tests Reveal Cocaine in Child’s System
Just days after ringing in the New Year, some Miami residents may have heard the news about a Miami mother who faces criminal charges after her young son was found to have cocaine in his system after undergoing medical examinations. According to local news reports, on January 4, the 5-month-old baby son of Miami resident and mother Naomi Delosangeles Ruiz was taken to the hospital after suffering a fall, but doctors became increasingly alarmed when cocaine was found in the young baby’s system. A medical analysis taken during the fall – which occurred for reasons that are still unknown to the public, as they have not been released by investigators – revealed that the boy had an “unknown amount of cocaine” in his system. Delosangeles Ruiz was also tested for cocaine in her system by the Department of Children and Families, and the tests showed that she also had cocaine in her system.
Delosangeles was ultimately arrested and charged with the criminal charge of child neglect with no bodily harm. Investigators wrote in their report of the case, “The defendant failed to provide and protect the victim with care, supervision and services necessary to maintain the victim’s physical and mental health.” Delosangeles was taken into custody by law enforcement and she was in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami as of Thursday, January 9. A Miami judge ordered Delosangeles to “stay away” from her young baby son as the case is pending, and Delosangeles pleaded not guilty to the charge against her. The investigation and the case is ongoing, and it remains to be seen whether Delosangles will actually face a criminal conviction in the case against her.
